Donating surplus produce with Ron

Many of you will recognise Ron, one of our very active members of Highland Community Garden.

What you may not know is that Ron regularly collects donated produce from our garden for Abbotsford’s Archway Food Bank.

Ron said, “So far, last week, thanks to donations from several gardeners, I was able to bring 8 large boxes of veggies to the Food Bank. Thank you.”

If you would like to donate, there are two clearly marked boxes in the shed. He delivers to the Food Bank every Tuesday morning, between 9:30 and 10:00. He also takes surplus produce on Thursday mornings to his other volunteer post.

Ron is a regular volunteer at Fraser Valley Gleaners. This is a not-for-profit organisation that takes donated surplus and non-marketable vegetables and turns them into a dehydrated vegetable soup mix. The soup mix is then distributed, free of charge, to hungry people around the world.

So far, since opening in 2001, they have produced 250,000,000 soup servings. That is 1/4 BILLION meals, distributed to 76 countries.

Processing is all done by volunteers, Monday to Friday, 8:30am till noon.

If you are looking to volunteer for a worthy cause, Fraser Valley Gleaners will be happy to have you. Some volunteers go every day, most choose one regular day each week, others go when they can. No fixed commitment is required.

“There are young people who go alone, or with their grandparents. Sometimes we have entire school classes with teachers, or church groups” said Ron. “If you want to know more, why don't you come to our next open house?”

Fraser Valley Gleaners is holding an open house next Saturday, July 20th, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at their premises at 85 Winson Road, near the Sumas border.

If you want to arrange a group volunteer session, or just find out more, youcan contact them by email: info@fvgleaners.org or visit their website: fvgleaners.org
